We need our Creatives!

The comedian Spike Milligan was in his garden when his neighbour said “I just saw you on the telly!” Spike walked through his house and knocked on his neighbour’s door. When he answered it, Spike said, “I just saw you in the garden.”
The creative mind buzzes and sometimes looks at the world in a surprising way.

One thing I’ve noticed in the past few months is the explosion of ideas and outpourings from creatives across the land. While many people are understandably stuck in the headlights, some creative people are surging on with energy and ideas and go into their imagination for inspiration. When normal life is suspended don’t we need creativity to soothe us or offer other possibilities? I don’t know about you but I’m a fan of box sets at the end of another day. Isn’t that the value of the arts – to show us the world as it was, as it is and as it could be?

“Creative people are adaptable and resourceful and those are surely vital qualities for our pupils to discover”

The creative landscape in the UK is huge and I am amazed by the talent in our company, in our teachers and in our students. Each week I meet more and more people who are getting on and doing it with some intensity. Maybe it was always there but I’m noticing it more. Creative people are adaptable and resourceful and those are surely vital qualities for our performing arts pupils to discover. In the coming months our young people need the opportunity to make sense of what is going on, to explore it, play around with it, understand it and through understanding it, to understand themselves.

By connecting your mind and your body you have a resource for releasing your feelings. And boy do these feelings need releasing? I can’t wait for our next big show – how ever far away it is. It will be a reminder that coming together as people we share a sense of our humanity. That it’s not just a private, separated world – it’s a shared expression of who we are – that’s where we truly understand ourselves.
